We are having possible issues with send/receive over the Internet with a particular computer. Most of our computers are Linux, currently with PT 8.0, but we want to use one computer that has a good Internet connection, Windows. The envisaged workflow is to gather changes from several computers onto a USB drive, then get that onto the Windows computer, send/receive over the Internet, then back to the USB drive and out to the computers. That allows me, on the other side of the world, to be up to date.

The problem seems to be that the USB drive s/r works fine, but s/r to the Internet says that there are no changes, which doesn’t seem right. The Windows computer only has Observer role for the project, if that makes a difference.

Is this a problem that others have seen? Is there something in the different versions of Paratext on Windows and Linux that could be causing the problem? Or is it no problem actually?

Which version of Paratext is being used on the Windows machine? This sounds like an issue that I thought we fixed.

Nevermind, we fixed the observer getting changes from the internet and being unable to give the changes via S/R to USB afterwards.

I think @sewhite is correct that S/R via the internet will require a non-observer to do the S/R.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for the pointers. Changing the role to Consultant appears to have
fixed the issue. Hopefully we are good to go with this set-up now, as
I’m on my way out of the country again!

I suspect that the observer status might be an issue. Observer status means that computer only receives changes, doesn’t send them. I’d try upgrading that user to consultant or translator status and see if that makes a difference. A user can have translator status and not given permission to edit any books.

I think when you upgrade an observer to consultant or translator, Paratext will recommend that they delete the project from their computer and receive a new copy. This is because of ending that protection that observer changes don’t get transferred elsewhere. Since the latest changes from the local team members would still be on the USB drive, the Windows user could delete the project, get a new copy from the server, do send/receive from the USB then another send/receive to the Internet. Or if the administrator is one of the local team members, they could change the user’s status, send/receive that to the USB, the Windows user could delete the project then get a new copy from the USB, then send/receive to the Internet.

One thing to check: Has the Windows computer first received the
changes from the USB drive, before doing S/R to the Internet? I
have seen this scenario:

Computers A and B do S/R to a USB drive. Computer C inserts the

USB drive, then does S/R to the Internet. However, Computer C has
not yet received the changes from the USB drive! Make sure all
users know that an Internet S/R does not touch an inserted USB
drive.

I teach this "up and down the mountain" sequence for S/R,

assuming three computers. Computer C has the only internet
connection. Steps 3 and 5 can get missed if it is assumed
that the data from the USB will be included in an Internet S/R
from Computer C:

  1. C sends everything to the Internet ,
and receives any work from Non-Local
    team members:
    Computer C is
    now fully updated with (A)(B)©****(Non-Local)
  1. C
receives A and B from the USB, and adds C:
** (A)(B)©** are on the USB
  1. C
    sends Non-Local to the
    USB:
USB is fully updated with (A)(B)©****(Non-Local)
  1. B
receives A’s work, and adds B:

** (A)****(B)** are on the USB

  1. B
    receives ©****(Non-Local) from the USB:
B is fully updated with (A)(B)©****(Non-Local)
  1. A
sends its own work to the USB: **
    (A)** is on the USB
  1. A
    receives (B)©(Non-Local) from the USB:
    ** A** is fully
    updated with (A)(B)©****(Non-Local)
Sorry, Thunderbird formatting is a bit flaky. I have a graphic or
a PPT/LO Presenter file to demonstrate this if anyone with decent
    Internet access wants it.
