Hi, I’ve just installed PT9. I see that when I run a search the results by default open on the right hand side of the screen and all the other windows and squished in beside it. I love how easily windows adjust to fit on the screen, but normally I would prefer that the search results open as a floating window somewhere around the middle of the screen. I know that I can choose to change it to a floating window after I do a search, but I would rather not have to do that every time. Is there a way to change the default setting somewhere so that I can set it to open as a floating window?

Yes, you can do something close to this. Do your search. If it does not pop up as a floating window, do a right-click on the title bar and make it a floating window. Do not close this window.

The next time you do a search, the results will replace the contents of this floating window.

Does that help?

Thanks anon892024,
It may help when I’ve already done a search. Though when I tried it, if you click on a window behind the floating window, the window behind does not move forward, so you can’t move the floating window into the background. I did work out that you can minimise the floating window though. It just means that when you want to go back to the Paratext program on your computer you will always have two windows to choose from, so if you just click on the icon in the taskbar (which is normally what I do) I then have the floating window in front of my other things and have to minimise it again. (So I will probably just want to close it to get it out of the way!)

Hi anon953007,

When you create any floating window, it is always in front unless you tell it that it can disappear behind another window. There is a pushpin in the title bar:

If you click on the pushpin, it pulls it out so that it is no longer pinned to the front.

Now you can click on the main window and let the search window disappear behind it.

Does this help?

Ooohh, yeah that’s great. I didn’t notice the little pin. I’ll try to get into the habit of doing that and keeping it there all day

Thank you!!

For what it’s worth, here’s what I do.

Most of my layouts have a search results window in autohide. It is always there when I open Paratext using one of these layouts. When I do a search, it pops out of autohide.

Your mileage may vary. But this works well for me.

Brilliant! I didn’t think of saving it in my layout. By “autohide” do you mean unpin it so it’s set to “Not always show on top”? This works well, then it’s just one click to hide the window when I open paratext and it will always be there to open where I want it when I run a search

Thank you!

Hi anon953007,

Autohide is not the same as unpinning. If you right-click in the title bar, you can choose “open as a floating window” or “Move to autohide”.

Sounds like it might be helpful for you to take a look at the “What’s new in Paratext 9” videos, which are here:

Just as a note to all. The current set of English Paratext 9 videos can be seen at: https://vimeo.com/channels/paratext9

The Spanish videos can be seen at: https://vimeo.com/channels/paratext9es

The English Paratext 8 videos can be seen at: https://vimeo.com/channels/paratext

There are links on that site to other language videos for Paratext 8.

Thanks anon892024 & anon848905,

I will have a look at the videos. I was just trying to get on with using PT9 as it looks pretty similar to PT8 and is fairly intuitive. It’s obviously easier to search the helps than the videos for something when I need it, but I’m sure the videos will show me what else is possible!

PS I actually prefer the floating window for my search results as I can place them wherever I want, but I’m sure autohide will be useful for other things.

Thanks again,

anon953007
