I want to show our committee every verse that has the Hebrew word chesed to help them think through (1) how the word is used in each context and (2) how the word is used across contexts. I can easily do a search on chesed in the source language search tool, and I get a nice list. I can then “save texts in list…” to output the texts of each verse – but it’s in Hebrew (naturally).

What I want to do is use the “save texts in list…” feature to output the texts in our PROJECT language rather than in Hebrew. Is there a straightforward way to create a source language reference list and then convert it to a project reference list?

I recommend doing the search from an Enhanced resource. The search results will be displayed in a list window. All List windows in Paratext have an option Copy references. Use that then paste the list of references into a note or document.

Here’s my current work-around:

  1. Conduct source language search.
  2. In the list, select “save list as…” from the menu and save as a .ref file.
  3. Open the .ref file in a text editor, and scroll to the bottom.
  4. Replace the ScrTextName and ScrTextID tags with the identifiers for the translation project. (I found these by outputting a .ref list from the project.)
  5. Save the file.
  6. Go back into PT, open the translation project, conduct a search on anything (to get the results list).
  7. In the results list, select “Open list” from the menu and load the list that was saved in step 5. This replaces the results from step 6 with the results from step 1.
  8. Now “Save texts in list”, and you get an output with the translated verses instead of the source language verses.

[Edit: when the source language versification is different from the project versification, the wrong verse will be output. There seems to be no solution for this. Changing the Versification identifiers in the .ref file doesn’t make a difference to the “Save texts in list”, though it does affect where you go when you double-click on a reference from the list in PT.]

Here is a procedure. First you do a search for all the verses in your Project, then you do a search in the Source text for the term you are interested in using the Share with List option.

  1. In your Target language project use this Find on the OT books only
    regex:(?<=\\v \S+\s)(?s)((?!\\v ).)*?(?=(\s*\\\w+)*\s*(\\v|Z))
This will give you one hit for every verse (23145 Items)
  2. Use the Source language Find to look for the Hebrew word you are interested in.
  3. Click Display Results and choose Share with List.
  4. In the List results you can now chose Copy references. This will be a list of verses where the Hebrew word occurs.

GEN 19:19 Your servant has found favor in your eyes, and you have shown great kindness to me in sparing my life. But I canʼt flee to the mountains; this disaster will overtake me, and Iʼll die.
GEN 20:13 And when God had me wander from my fatherʼs household, I said to her, ‘This is how you can show your love to me: Everywhere we go, say of me, “He is my brother.” ’ ”
GEN 21:23 Now swear to me here before God that you will not deal falsely with me or my children or my descendants. Show to me and the country where you now reside as a foreigner the same kindness I have shown to you.”
. . . . .

Regex has been edited to make it compatible with various versions of PT. Best results are from 9.1 or 9.2 using regex:(?<=\\v \S+\s)(?s)((?!\\v ).)*?(?=(\s*\\\+?\w+[\s\*])*\s*\Z)

An alternative might be to use the Biblical Terms Tool for your project. Select OT books. Find the term chesed. The verses containing this term will display for your project. You can specify one or more Comparative texts. You can see the term with its definition, its occurrences in your project and in another translation (resource or project). It is a dynamic list: You can approve renderings and edit specific verses.

(When I searched on the Hebrew term הֶסֶד, I could type this in the Find box but no results appeared, with or without vowel pointings, but it did appear under the English rendering ‘lovingkindness’.)

@anon044949 Do you mind giving step-by-step instructions of how @viverechristus can find and copy every “verse that has the Hebrew word chesed” from his Project using Enhanced Resources. I do not see how to do it from your picture.

A quicker workaround:

  1. Search [e.g. for chesed] in SLT
  2. Open search in translation project
  3. Choose option shared with list
  4. Find term \v

This works, because every result from SLT is part of a biblical verse. The same caveat about different versifications applies.

Yes, this works with the search list window generated by an Enhanced Resource. If you start with the Enhanced resources and not the SLT, then you can refine the search for a particular sense of the Hebrew/Greek word.
