I kept Paratext 8 when I upgraded to 9, because I’m a “just in case” type. Now, I see no use for keeping it, and find it a nuisance because things like saved lists go into the My Paratext 8 Projects folder instead of into 9.

Do I simply uninstall 8? Do I need to move my saved lists, etc., to the 9 folder first?

Any other directions would be appreciated.

You’re welcome @anon589069.

We’re glad you like PT9 so much!! :+1:

At this point, I would suggest renaming the My Paratext 9 Projects folder to MP9P or something, and the using PT9 for a bit to make sure everything is functioning properly. After you are sure it is functioning properly (and you can do Send/Receive with all of your projects, etc), you should then be able to delete MP9P completely.

After you have deleted MP9P, you can rename My Paratext 8 Projects to My Paratext 9 Projects:

  1. Do a Send/Receive with all of your Projects (just to be safe)
  2. Close Paratext
  3. Rename My Paratext 8 Projects to My Paratext 9 Projects
  4. Right-click on the Paratext 9 icon > Run as Administrator
  5. Locate the My Paratext 9 Projects folder
  6. Click OK
  7. Once Paratext opens, test everything to make sure it works

I’m assuming you’re running Paratext 9.1 at this point, which is exclusively 64-bit, so I do believe that you can safely delete the C:\Program Files (x86)\Paratext 8\ and Paratext 9 folders. But if there is anything in them, I would suggest a similar renaming and testing process to what I described above (instead of deleting). Once you’re confident everything is functioning properly, then you can delete. I just tested this sort of process myself and I didn’t see any adverse effects.

Both PT8 and PT9 are designed to use the same My Paratext Projects folder (either 8 or 9), depending on what was installed already.

Do you have both a My Paratext 8 Projects folder and a My Paratext 9 Projects folder? If so, are they actually both in use by their respective versions of Paratext?

Uninstalling will never remove any of the files in the My Paratext # Folder.

Thanks for your quick response, james_post.

Yes, I have both a My Paratext 8 Projects and a My Paratext 9 Projects folder. No, they are not both in use. All the files/folders in My Paratext 9 Projects are dated last year when I upgraded to 9. All the changes are happening in My Paratext 8 Projects.

I just don’t see the point of having the unnecessary duplication (9 is 105MB, 8 is 180MB). Nor does it make sense to have changes happening in the 8 folders/files, when it is version 9 we are using. I know it does not affect the functioning of Paratext, and I know I had a choice when I first upgraded. I’m just sorry I chose to install alongside version 8. I’ve since uninstalled version 8.

So, how do I eliminate the need for My Paratext 8 Projects and move exclusively to My Paratext 9 Projects? Whatever the procedure, it only has to be done on two computers, mine and my wife’s.

(I assume I can just delete the empty C:\Program Files (x86)\Paratext 8\ and Paratext 9 folders and subfolders, since Paratext 9 is 64 bit and runs in C:\Program Files\Paratext 9, even though the data is Paratext 8 folders. Sorry, that just grates).
