somehow I have got a small "a" in paratext. When I click on it a text box opens with \f+\f*. How do I get rid of this

This is a footnote. Put the insertion point before the "a" and press the forward delete key. This should remove it.

Sounds like it's a footnote. For most views, you should just be able to select it and delete it in the text.
