By default, PT creates new books in a project with all the verse numbers inserted. But sometimes it would be nice to have more than that, for example, particularly in Psalms, it would be nice to be able to copy all the \q1, \q2 and \qs … \qs* from another project whose formatting you like.

We would like to copy the formatting from Psalms in the CARS Russian, for example.

I could imagine some projects wanting to copy the formatting from the entire Bible. You’d get the \mt’s \s1 \p \q’s \b – it would all be laid out for you, and you could always change anything you didn’t like.

Paratext can already do this if you create a book based on another project.

To be more precise, this is Project > Create Book(s) > Create based on. It will copy the markers from that project to the new book.
Note: I think this only includes paragraph-style markers.

Yes, that’s exactly what I need. I’d never tried that option, because I thought all three options were about different verse numbering systems. Maybe the option needs a more creative name. Maybe Create with formatting from project:

Even the Guide is not great in this case: “to create a book using the same markers as another text of your choice”. I think there shoudl be some reference to formatting, indentation, choice of where to put subheadings … otherwise the reader doesn’t realise how useful this option really is.

Hi wdavidhj

Your not actually copying the formatting, but rather the markers.
Copying the markers creating a new project /sorta/ copies the formatting
if the stylesheet being used in the new project is the same as the
stylesheet being used in the project. If you assign a different
stylesheet or use custom.sty for the new project, formatting may differ.

Yes, I know, but given that most peopel have a sensible USFM.STY, one of the the on-screen effects is that the paragraphs are formatted (indented, etc.)

I was trying to suggest a solution to the problem that I, at least, encountered: namely that I had never tried the Create Based On: option, because the name did not conjure up a picture of what it would actually do :unamused:.
