On a computer I support where the users usually uses 7.6β, I just opened 7.5 and got the message “Recovered unsaved text for CRV. Please review this window and save or discard text.” But CRV is a resource – how can there be any unsaved text?

BTW, I think that message could be clearer:

  • “this window”: the window that warning is in is not the same window at you’re being asked to review, but the implication is that it is;
  • When you get to the window you’re being asked to review, it would be really nice if it highlighted the recovered text. If you get this message after being on holiday (vacation) It’s pretty hard to remember what text might have not been saved.

Yes, it’s the Contemporary Russian Version, © 2011, Russian Bible Society.

Were you surprised, or just interested?

It would be great to get resources like this on paratext.org , but Mike Cochran said that each proposed resource needs a “champion” – someone committed enough to wade through the quagmire of copyrights and permissions! :fearful:

Probably more “just interested”. As the person responsible for all the Paratext Resources on the webpage, and being involved in the resources since before Paratext was released in 1997, I like to keep up on these things.

I can talk to Vladimir and Timur (Russian Bible Society) and see if I can encourage that to be done. (They will be here at meetings.)

Blessings,

Barb

This could be overwhelming, but I could write quite a list of resources – well, almost all Bible texts, actually, that I’d like to see on paratext.org:

Russian

  • Russian Bible Society Version;
  • Biblica version;
  • WBTC (Church of Christ) version;
  • CARS version (copyright shared with Biblica);
  • Slovo Zhizny (older Biblica NT)
  • files for interlinearising the source texts in Russian (a couple of these are accessible free on the Web – maybe they’d give us access to them?

Persian:

  • Old Persian Version
  • Living Bible (Tafsiri) (© Biblica)
  • New Millennium Translation (by Elam)
  • maybe even the NT that became the TPV, since I believe that quite a few changes were made in the final publication;

And could it be an aim to get as many other translations as possible up there? Surely those who use PT, (UBS, SIL, IBT, etc.) would recognise the value of having them there so that others can refer to them. There are currently 1115 translations available free on YouVersion (albeit a minority available offline): wouldn’t most of the copyright holders also agree to make them available to other translators?

Maybe I’m out of step with the organisation’s thinking: I guess it could be said that if translations exist in languages related to the one you’re working on, you would just contact your colleagues in neighbouring areas and ask them to share the relevant project or resource with you. However, my experience has been different: I posted a question on PT Supporters asking how I could find out the name of the project administrator for Kyrgyz, for example, and was told that this is private information and cannot be disclosed. And if I want to get access to a project that is complete, there presumably is no longer either a team or an administrator unless the work for that language is continuing in some way. So here’s giving my vote to a centralised system with as much as possible available there.

In the not-so-distant future (Paratext 8 – due out possibly this winter) the plan is to have all the resources come from a centralized location, called the DBL (Digital Bible Library) (check out digitalbiblelibrary.org you can see what’s there, although you can’t “take anything out”/download yet). This is a joint repository which will eventually hold all Bible translations done in the entire global community (that’s the plan, anyway). Currently there are 1,085 entries. Each copyright holder controls who gets access to their texts and it is hoped that most of them will allow Paratext to be one of the “card holders” to use them. Biblica has most of their texts in there already. YouVersion also gets quite a few of their texts from the DBL. UBS and SIL are working at it, but they have a lot more copyrighted texts. And many of the older versions aren’t in an acceptable electronic version yet; some still need to be keyed in, let alone coded. I will pass your request on up the chain.

Blessings,

Barb

Right, I’m familiar with the Digital Bible Library, having done the SIL DBL training last Aug in Kenya. But you having spelt it out in your post will be good for others who are not yet familiar with it.

So I should have said “DBL” rather than “YouVersion” in my last posting. At the moment, YouVersion feels like the public face of the DBL, though. In fact, I had inferred that YouVersion got all its texts from the DBL, but I guess, as you say, that’s not the case: the numbers point to that, since some of the texts in the DBL are marked “not for publication” or something similar, so that they are not (yet) released to the public. So YouVersion will have less than 1085 texts from the DBL, but they have 1115 in total (as of today). Do you have an idea which texts they get from elsewhere?

No, I don’t know which texts they get elsewhere. They had many texts before they started getting them from DBL, but they have committed to changing over to get as many as possible from DBL. They still have agreements from other copyright holders which have not expired yet, but I hope they are encouraging these org. to get their texts into DBL

We were getting some false indications that resources changed because of
minor differences between the stored text and the text we get back after
displaying it. We have started ignoring those differences, but can’t recall
which version we made the changes in.

The only way that this message can normally come up is if Paratext doesn’t
shut down normally. Hopefully that means the warning message is rare.

Currently, the only way to show differences is the “Compare Texts” tool.
Opening that tool may be even more confusing.

CRV is not a resource from the Paratext Resource page. Is this a local text which has be created as a resource for those working in related language?
