I’m using Bible Modules to create abridged stories of OT characters, and something I’m into is not using a full quotation and having proper punctuation. In particular, I’m abridging Job and don’t necessarily want to use the first thing out of each person’s mouth in ch.3-37. The best I’ve come up with is:
\q1 \no «
\refnp JOB x:xx

However, there is a space between the opening quotation mark and the first word of the verse. Does anyone know how to get rid of this space? Also, is there anything that can be done while keeping verse markers? This requires not including \v markers.

BTW, end quotation marks can easily be made by using \no » after the final reference, in case anyone else runs into a similar problem.

I think you want to look at the \rep marker. It allows you to replace some of the text of a \ref or \refnp to make it read better.

On that same linked page, you can also see how to use the \inc marker to have verse markers included in the output.

You do need to use the \rep marker.
What you need to do is to use \rep to replace the first word of the verse with the first word preceded by the quote mark.

\q1
\refnp JOB x:xx
\rep 1stWord =>«1stWord

Thanks for the quick help, guys. I’ll give the \rep marker a try and see how it turns out.

As an update, this works the way I wanted it to. Thanks very much for pointing this out to me. I did find, though, that nothing else can be done to the same verse. It provided an error when I used the following:
\ref JOB 4:7-8 \no »
\rep I=>«I
OR
\ref JOB 4:7-8
\rep I=>«I
\no »

But this worked:
\ref JOB 4:7
\rep I=>«I
\ref JOB 4:8 \no »
