I would like to add a list of proper names to the Spellchecker. We are following a Spanish version (RV60) for the correct way to spell names, so it seems to me we would save time if we could add those beforehand. Any advice welcome. Thanks, Chris

You should do two things.

  1. Paste the list into an extra book, like the XXA book and then use the Wordlist to approve them.
  2. Add the name choices in the Biblical Terms tool so that the team will see that choice when they are translating.

You should be prepared for the team to change their minds along the way. When they do, you should immediately mark the old choice as invalid in the Wordlist tool and change the spelling in Biblical Terms tool as well.

For some reason the text was truncated.

Hello Shegnada,

Thanks, that is very helpful and logical. I’m impressed with the speed of your response!

Do you have any leads on where I might find such a list of proper names from the RV60? Mexico Branch computer and translation departments so far can’t help me.

Blessing,

Chris

Hi Shegnada,

Another question; is there a way to bulk add these names to the Biblical Terms tool?

Thanks,

Chris

Once there is text in the Scripture books, you can have Paratext guess the names, (on the Biblical Terms menu, go to Tools/Guess Renderings) but that is the only way.

As for getting the list of names from a resource, you could try and see if Paratext can guess them, but I have never attempted it and it may not be possible since resources are not editable. Still, you can use that resource as one of your Comparative Texts and go down the list of names, you can then copy the name from the resource and add it to your project rendering list.

Thank you, Shegnada

I had a similar question. Just to clarify: even if one had a list of proper names (i.e. a list generated by transliteration algorithm from Hebrew or Greek), there would be no way to import that list of renderings into the Biblical Terms tool?

I just tested this. If you adapt names from Spanish, then check the names that are correct (or close enough) as approved, the name will appear in Biblical terms tool as approved.
(By the way, I tried to adapt from RVR1960 but nothing happen. When I selected “Spanish” from the list, then the adaptation tool worked.

Using the Guess names features will also put the guessed names in the Biblical terms tool, but it will not approve those entries in the Biblical terms tool. A person needs to manually approve each one.
These are the two options. There is no “import names from…” project.

Hi anon044949, This is helpful. Do you know what source the Spanish terms come from? As you say, not RV60. nor DHH.

Thanks, anon044949.

We do not have a project that we can adapt from, so I guess we just have to populate the Biblical Terms list one word at a time.

I turned on the “Guess names” feature just to see how it works, without consulting the rest of the team. I was expecting that it would ask me for confirmation before actually marking all the guesses in the text, but it processed the whole list. Is there any way now to undo the guesses, or turn this feature off? Or are we now committed to follow through with the process if we want the orange highlight to go away?

Okay, I see that I can turn the highlight off in the text under the View menu. But the question remains, whether I can undo/remove the guesses generated the Biblical Terms list (if the team does not find them helpful…)?

Yes, you can remove unconfirmed guesses. Go to the Biblical Terms Menu and under Tools, click “Clear Guessed Renderings”. It will not remove any renderings that you have already done yourself or confirmed, just the ones that are still unconfirmed guesses made by Paratext.
