Many people are getting this error with their source language Paratext Resources BYZ.p8z and HEB.p8z after installing PT 9.1. Here is a procedure to fix both resources.

Prerequisites

Procedure

  1. Remove the BYZ.p8z and HEB.p8z resource files from the My Paratext 8 Projects/_Resources directory. (Newer installs: My Paratext 9 Projects/_Resources )
  2. Suggestion: move them to the Desktop.
  3. Run the Paratext 9.1 installer.
  4. Choose Repair (or Install if you have not yet installed PT 9.1).
4a. Parallels on Mac users: see Note below.
  5. Download and update to the latest patch from https://paratext.org/download
  6. Verify that that the BYZ.p8z and HEB.p8z resources were restored to the _resource directory.
  7. Open Paratext and verify they both appear correctly in Paratext.
  8. Delete the old BYZ.p8z and HEB.p8z resources.

Note: the Repair function may not work in Parallels on Mac. In this case, follow these instructions:

  1. Uninstall Paratext 9.1 (check “Keep settings”)
  2. Reinstall Paratext 9.1
  3. Continue with the steps above

Apparently this works only with the online installer! The offline installer does not have a repair function. If you will use the offline installer the Hebrew is no longer working. I have downloaded the online installer and the message has disappeared.

A question: Is paratext 8 now still working? And can I use the programs still side by side? I have left it on my computer since the person I am working with is using paratext 8.

Blessings,

Apparently it does, I just tried. Sorry for the question! I was a bit afraid to mix things up.

Hi, CrazyRocky. Thanks for these instructions. May I suggest that you reposition the note about Parallels on Mac as a final instruction on step 2 of the procedure list? I’m a Parallels user and, impulsive person that I am, I went through the steps several times before realizing that I needed to have read the note at the end.

Perhaps other users have more sense than I. In fact, that’s likely.

Also, for those of us who only occasionally uninstall Paratext, you may want to add a reminder that an option to keep settings will present itself after the user initiates the uninstall process via Windows Settings / Apps. (The fix for us Parallels on Mac users involves uninstalling Paratext 9.1, keeping settings, and then reinstalling, but I poked around a bit looking for a “keep settings” option somewhere at the app level before doing the uninstall and happily finding that there I had an option to keep settings.

Thanks!

I have the same issue with BYZ & HEB getting a corrupt/invalid error after the 9.1 upgrade, but the fix suggested above does not work (in fact after removing and replacing I can’t get the SL tool to open at all). The resources do not show up after the repair option. Any other suggestions? (FWIW Paratext 8 is working on the same computer and the Source Language Tool works normal) Can I downgrade to Version 9.0?

@jwagner Can you confirm that you did, in fact, delete or remove the BYZ and HEB files before the repair? (Step #1)

Yes, I moved the two files to the trash, but did not delete them completely.

I’ll contact you off list to schedule a remote session.
EDITED. Problem was that Repair in Parallels had no effect. Had to uninstall and reinstall Paratext 9.1

Curious. One of my test machines is virtual Windows on a Mac set up in VirtualBox. The “repair” option worked fine there.

I actually had the same problem. I installed 8.0 after 9.1 on my brand new Windows system and got the BYZ and HEB error. I followed my own instructions above then ran repair. I had the _Resources folder open and repair ran quite quickly and did not put the BYZ and HEB in the folder. Since I had a backup of my install on my old computer I just copied them from the backup _Resources folder and it worked.

Moral of the story is if you are going to install Paratext 8 after installing 9.1, move or make a copy of BYZ.p8z and HEB.p8z and then put them back after installing Paratext 8.

I am having the same problem as described above, except with the GRK file. I have deleted the BYZ, HEB and GRK files from the Paratext 8 folder, then uninstalled 9.1, then reinstalled it plus the .39 patch. I did this twice and both times I got the “GRK file is corrupt or invalid” message on opening Paratext 9.1. What should I try next?

A similar problem was experienced in Ethiopia and the user got a strange error that asked him to get another license to access the source texts. The repair approach did fix the issue. However, if the repair doesn’t work, it is recommended to uninstall PTX 9.1, delete the BYZ file in the _Resources folder, then reinstall PTX 9.1.

Note that we are looking into this problem and are hoping to find a permanent solution. It’s a little complicated (caused by the interactions between Paratext 8 and Paratext 9 installers) so I’m not going to promise we can fix it, but thought I should let you know that we are working on it.

Maybe the fix process can be a bit simplified. I tried this on a test machine and it solved the problem.

  1. Delete BYZ.p8z
  2. Run the Paratext [Phone Removed] patch

The patch will restore a deleted BYZ.p8z in a form that 9.1 accepts, even if Paratext 9.1 is already at [Phone Removed].

PS. I can’t test this on a Mac Parallels. My test machine for this actually is a Mac virtual Windows, but using VirtualBox to run the virtual machine, not Parallels.

@sewhite, do we know if this would fix any other corrupted SLT resources (i.e., HEB or GRK)?

I have tried the solution that was posted here. It works for BYZ resource but may not for other language resources like RCU17T.p8z which is a Chinese resource. Is it because actually this resource does not have a form that PT 9.1 accepts? However, it still works well in PT 9.0.

I don’t see RCU17 as an available resource in Paratext. Did you get it from somewhere else? Or maybe it is a resource that has changed its name since then.

it is not available in PT9.1, but it does appear in PT8 and 9.0
