Ssf file extensions

Question

I used to have quite a few projects that I would use for reference in translation. Mostly backtranslation projects. I’ve lost them all after PT7 I think. I can still see them listed under my PT projects as ssf file extensions. But don’t have a clue as to how to get them back. Anyone?

SSF files are from PT7. If the project folders corresponding to the SSF files are still there, then you need to migrate the projects to PT8 or later before they will show up. If the folders are missing, then you’ll have to find a backup of the project or something - or else they are lost.

It wasn’t going to work, so I just downloaded the latest PT7 version on my new computer since I’m using it for reference sake and don’t need to change anything it, nor do a S/R.

Just to clarify for others who might find themselves in this situation. If you have Paratext 7 files on your computer (usually in My Paratext Projects) there are a couple of ways to get these into Paratext 8/9.

• If you have Paratext 8 installed then you can use the migration tools (you can see these when you try to open the project). This process should work even if Paratext 7 is not currently installed.
• Paratext 9 no longer has these tools, but you can use the Backup/Restore process to migrate the project to Paratext 9. When you use this option, but sure to check the box to include settings when you backup. And be sure to include settings when you restore the project.
• If you no longer have Paratext 7 installed on the computer (to be able to make a backup of the project) then you can also create a new project in Paratext 9 and import the data from the Paratext 7 folders. NOTE that in this process you have to add your settings manually.

With any of the processes you would need to verify registration information and user settings if that is needed in PT8/9.

To clarify the second point: You can make a backup in Paratext 7, then restore from that backup into Paratext 9.

If keeping the project history is important to you, then the only way is to use Paratext 8 to migrate the project. Restoring from a backup file will give you the text and notes and Biblical terms but will not show any history of how the books were edited over time.
Importing books from a PT7 project into PT9 will also not show any history. I also think you cannot import project notes and Biblical terms into PT9 from PT7.
