(Trying out the new polling feature. Please give your input below)

There is a new feature in the Wordlist in 7.6. If you click on an icon right before a word in the wordlist you can create a note to discuss the spelling of the word. This is intended for two situations: a) you are not sure what the correct spelling of a word is and you would like to start a discussion about what the correct spelling should be, or b) you have had an extended discussion about the correct spelling of the word and you want to record the result so that if the question comes up again you know what was discussed previously.

So when you click on this icon you will see (more or less) a standard note editing window. The title of the window will be “Discuss Spelling of XYZ”.

Question: Is that title enough that people will have sufficient idea of what this note is for:

  • Yes

  • No, we ought to have a yellow box and a “more help” link to discuss this

  • No, we ought to have a yellow box and a “more help” link and a Guide to discuss this

I could not see the title, but then I noticed you said “it will be”. I have used the Wordlist recently in 7.6, but did not even notice the faint little square at the left. I tried it out for Acts which is what I was working on, but then the note appeared in Mark because that was the first place this word occurred. Immediately the “current” book in the Worrdlist switched to Mark, which is not what I want when I am working in Acts. It would also be good to indicate in the title bar what is the current book.I only noticed it had switched to Mark when I noticed that the references were in Mark only.

One thing that I did not mention in the post was that we are working on some UI redesign for this feature. My current proposal that these notes ONLY show up in the wordlist. IMO it is too confusing if we show them in the Biblical text … showing them there confuses the user into thinking they are a note about this occurrence of the word … not the word in general (in fact it was that confusion submitted as part of a bug report that got us thinking about what is necessary in order to make people understand what these notes are really for).

It seems to me this is equivalent to a new tag, which users could define for themselves (we have a note tag in Swahili, which says literally - Small Matters - to deal with everything from spelling to format markers to punctuation). If you did want to have some sort of explanation, I would link it into that topic of note tags. I have found that few mother tongue translators use the different note tags effectively.

I’ve also found that MTTs rarely use the help guides effectively, so I feel they would need to be personally trained to use this new tool. As a result I think simply saying “Discuss Spelling of XYZ” is sufficient and it will be up to a trainer or project manager to teach the translators to use it properly.

I’m still using 7.5, so I haven’t seen the tool yet… And since I don’t have the tool, I’ve been discussing spelling issues in regular Text Notes (with an unique ‘tag’ so they stand out from the rest). Anyway, given that I haven’t seen the new tool (i.e., where it appears, how it’s accessed [can you print a ‘spelling note’ list, like you can for ‘text notes’?], etc.), I figure the title you have should be sufficient. [NB the MTTs I work with don’t use computer, so this is just /my/ opinion.] Having said that, and in light of some of the earlier comments, something to set the spelling note editor off visually from a standard note editing window might be more useful than a different title (who reads titles?! :stuck_out_tongue: )
