I am trying to install PT 7.2.52β to all our users’ computers. With one user, who has Windows 8.1, I cannot run the SPUD file for the β2 update. That filetype is not associated with PT, nor is it registered in Windows (I go into Default Programs, and this filetype is not listed).

Suggestions? And shall I file a Problem Report?

Did you first install the 7.6.51 file located at http://paratext.org/system/files/ptwTestVersion76Installer.exe ?

This is the program which first installs 7.6 and which associates .spud files with PT 7.6. The 7.6.52 spud file is simply an update, not the full program.

Yes, I did. And the user already had 7.5 (that’s also a prerequisite for the β installation), which presumably would also have registered the .SPUD filetype, no?

I think 7.5 only associated .pud files and the .spud extension was created specifically for 7.6 (in order to allow the installer program to differentiate which version it was upgrading). But I don’t have insider knowledge and that’s just my guess. Have you tried re-installing the 7.6 installer?

mnjames is correct, the .SPUD version of the update files was added for 7.6
beta that installs in a different folder so that it can be run alongside
the 7.5 installation.

The 7.6 beta 1 installer should have created the association between .SPUD
and the update program in the 7.6 program folder.

I went back and installed 7.6 again, and after that the SPUD worked. I had let the user install 7.6 the first time, and I guess he didn’t do it right :unamused:. So much for trying to delegate …

In easy terms:

.PUDs are updates for the version of Paratext with the green icon. The icon is labelled “Paratext 7”
.SPUDs are updates for the version of Paratext with the orange icon. The icon is labelled “Paratext 7 TestVersion”

If you don’t have an orange “Paratext 7 TestVersion” icon on your desktop or in your list of programs in Start menu, Windows won’t know what to do with a .SPUD update until you install the test version installer (which will have “test version installer” in its name). You can run the regular version (normal release or beta) and the test version (always beta) on the same machine. Though it may be useful to note that they use the same MyParatextProjects folder.
