I’m trying to find documentation to understand what these fields mean in the Paratext registry, under the “Publishing” tab of a project. Here is a list of the fields, for those searching for these field names in the forums like I did:

  • Localised Full Name
  • Localised Description
  • Abbreviation
  • Localised Abbreviation
  • Script
    • choices are: Adlam, Afaka, Latin, etc
  • Numerals
    • choices are: Arabic 1234, Bengali ১ ২ ৩ ৪, etc
  • Audience
    • choices are: Children, Basic, Common, Common - Literary, Literary, Literary - Liturgical, Liturgical
  • Media
    • tags are: Electronic, Print, Audio, Video
  • Contributors
  • Rightsholders
  • Rights Administrator
  • Copyright
  • Promotion text

I need some more detail about these fields, and what they are meant for.

  • What is the difference between Localised Full Name and Localised Description? Can one of them be left blank? How long should these fields be?
  • What is the difference between Abbreviation and Localised Abbreviation? Is it OK if it doesn’t match the short name in Paratext? Can both the Abbreviation and Localised Abbreviation be in a non-Latin script, for example, Arabic script? Can the abbreviation be a word rather than an abbreviation?
  • What are the definitions of the audiences (“common”, “literary”, etc)? And what difference does this make?
  • What is the Media field intended for? If the translation is not yet in audio format, but is expected to be recorded in audio format, should this field include “Audio”?
  • Where does the text found in “Promotion Text” get used?

Hi,

I complete this information for Wycliffe projects, and this is what we do:
*Localised Full Name: Name of the Language Community.
*Localised Description: Name of the Language Community followed by Canon (Bible, NT, Portion)
You can leave the Localised Description blank.
*Abbreviation: should be the ISO code (found on the Basic tab following the Language)
*Localised Abbreviation: ISO code followed by a delimeter if there are several dialects that use the same ISO. For example, there are 5 Huave languages, so I would put huvJ (for Jucitan), huvSM (for San Mateo) These will probably not match the Paratext Short Name, but should be in Latin script, as they are for the benefit of DBL publishers.
*Audience has to do with the education level of the readers of the text. We use “Common” for almost every text. If it is specifically a children’s bible, you would to use "Children. If it is an “easy read” Bible, you may want to use “Basic”.
*The Media field is where you define how the text is going to be shared. For the DBL, it will be Electronic. If you plan to license it to FCBH for audio files, it will be Audio as well.
*The Promotion Text will show up in digital publishers’ apps at the bottom of a “page”. So, if you have a website you would like people to be directed to for more information, this is a good place to put it.

Thank you, that’s helpful. I have some comments:

  • Localised Full Name: this should be in the language of the translation, and not in English, right? For example, you would put here كتاب الحياة and not “Kitab El Hayat” or “New Arabic Version”, right?
  • Localised Description: same question
  • Abbreviation: does this have to be the ISO code of the language? In our case, the ISO code is completely unknown by the target audience of the translation, and would not mean much to those reading the translation, and it does seem to appear in the interface of Bible apps. Also, which ISO code would you suggest, the two-letter one or the three-letter one?
  • Localised Abbreviation: surely, here, it would not be appropriate to use the ISO code, as it’s not localised. Shouldn’t we put “المشتركة” instead of “arMushtaraka”, for example? The abbreviation does appear in Bible apps, and it would be confusing to the target audience if it isn’t in the localised language.

Thank you for the helpful information about the other fields. It’s useful to know what these fields will be used for.

Localised Full Name should be in the language that the reader can understand, as should Localised Description.
Abbreviation - It is important for this to be the ISO code for the language. If you pick a three-letter code that you think might relate to the people group, and it happens to also be the ISO code for a different language, our publishers can become confused. I actually believe that the Language field on the Basic tab feeds this information to our publishers currently. This is a field you can not adjust.
Localised Abbreviation - You can put what you think your people might recognize here. I believe you are limited to 7 characters.

Are you talking about the Abbreviation field on the Publishing tab? I don’t see any evidence of what you claim - it seems freely editable and seems to have no correlation to the language code. I would actually think it wrong to put the ISO code as the abbreviation since that would result in multiple projects having the same abbreviation (e.g. all English Bibles would all have the same abbreviation).

It looks like Localized Abbreviation is limited to 16 characters and the non-localized one is 12 characters.

I have a question regarding “Promotion Text” specifically. @anon175865 said that:

*The Promotion Text will show up in digital publishers’ apps at the bottom of a “page”. So, if you have a website you would like people to be directed to for more information, this is a good place to put it.

If you look at Bible translations on YouVersion’s Bible app, at a page from CSB for instance, at the bottom, it shows this:

If you click the “Learn More” link, you see this:

Does the “Promotion Text” entered in Paratext registry end up at the bottom of the page, followed by a “Learn More” link, or is it only found in the page that is shown after clicking “Learn More”? Does the “Copyright” field get displayed at the footer of the page, or in the “Learn More” page?
