Free translation in FieldWorks from Back Translation in ParaText

Importing Back Translation along with Vernacular into Fieldworks

When importing Scripture from Paratext into Fieldworks, It is possible to have the back translation import along with the Scripture verses. The back translation will appear on the Free translation line in the Fieldworks Interlinearizer. Fieldworks does this automatically during import, but the back translation project in Paratext has to be linked to the vernacular project.

This functionality is exactly what I’m trying to accomplish but so far I’ve been unsuccessful. I am ParaTExt [Phone Removed]and FieldWorks 8.2.

I’ve tried exporting a FLExText from PT by going to Tools > Advanced > Export FLExText from the project interlinearizer but when I look at the raw XML the back translation is not there.

I’ve also attempted to import from inside FLEX by going File > Import > Standard Format Interlinear and selecting either the vernacular or the back translation but obviously that didn’t work either.

You would need to use Translation Editor to export the back translation of
a project into a Paratext project.

If you use File > Export > Standard Format (USFM-Paratext), there is a
radio button to choose to export the back translation and a check box to
select which language you wan to export.

In Paratext, you will probably want to change the exported back translation
so it uses the usfm.sty Style Sheet and then fix any markers since
Translation Editor has some styles that don’t directly map to those in
usfm.sty.

@John+Wickberg What you are saying seems to contradict what @anon044949 originally said in the post I quoted. He said that “It is possible to have the back translation import along with the scripture verses”. In PT, I have a standard project and a back translation project that is populated via the interlinearizer. My question is what is the import process from ParaText that accomplishes this functionality.

The process I was illustrating assumes that the back translation is in a project not the interlinearizer and that the project type is “back translation”. If you need more information on setting up a back translation project look under “How do I set up a back translation project” in Help.

Below is a screenshot of the project settings for the back translation. Is there somewhere else besides the interlinearizer that you can export a portion as flextext? Or, is exporting the portion in flextext format not what I need to do?

The original post wasn’t clear to me what the process is to achieve the functionality that @anon044949 described. Maybe some more detailed instructions would be helpful?

To import Scripture text from Paratext into FLEx, you need to use the Choose Texts menu or toolbar item while in Texts & Words > Interlinear Texts view. This should show a dialog that has an option “Bible” with a list of available books from Paratext. This should import in the vernacular and the back translation texts if they are hooked up in Paratext. This requires that your FW project be linked with the Paratext project by choosing it inside Paratext located at Project > Project Properties and Settings > Associations > Associated Lexical Project.

You can see how this should work in FLEx here (under the Using FLEx Interlinearizer on Paratext data heading about 3/4 of the way down).

Note that this functionality is probably not well-tested so your results may vary.

Also note that this will not work with Paratext 8.0 until FW is updated to handle the new Paratext API.

Jeffery, We have not been talking about using the FlexText method of importing Scripture into Fieldworks. As was described above the work is done by two operations: 1) In Paratext under Project properties click on the association tab and select the Flex database you want to use, 2) in FLEx go to the Texts & Words area click on the Choose text icon and check off the Bible books you want to import. Flex will do the rest. If you have a back translation project associated with you vernacular project in the way you have shown in your screen shot, Flex will detect that and import the Back translation into the Free translation line for you.

You cannot currently import interlinearized data in to FLEx even though “FlexText” gives that impression. (The data models between Paratext and FLEx are too different currently) I did not think it worked at all for Scripture, but I did try it just now and the results were not as good as using the method in the paragraph above.

Thanks for the explanations. The part of adding the text from within FLEX was what I was missing. Thanks for the clarification and sorry for the run around! It is working as expected now.

No problem. I am here to help. Now that you successfully associated you Paratext and Fieldworks projects, have you noticed that when you right click on a word in Paratext there are two addition options “Find in Dictionary” and “Find similar words”?
