In my suggestions for alternative ways to handle a phrase/verse, I use square brackets for optional information (e.g. implied information). However, if the information begins with D, E, G, or L, Consultant Notes automatically changes it to a category marker (“Discourse [D]:”, etc.). Is there any way to turn this off?
I’ve discovered that I can delete the word “Discourse” and type the rest of the word I’d intended following the “D” in the brackets, but all that is a bit of a hassle. Please tell me where the “off” button is for this feature.

Amanda+T,
I’m guessing that there is a file called Autocorrrect.txt in the Consultant Notes Project folder. And in that file you have something like this:
E–>Exegesis and Text [E]:
D–>Discourse [D]:

This says if you type a capital E change it to Exegesis and Text [E}:

I would suggest changing the left side to something like:
[e] or [E} so that you don’t change all of the Es.
You should only get the category when you type [e]

To follow up on this, it looks like Paratext automatically creates an Autocorrect.txt file with entries like:
[e–>Exegesis and Text [E]:
[d–>Discourse [D]:

So, I would suggest changing the left side to:
[e]–>Exegesis and Text [E]:
[d]–>Discourse [D]:

If you don’t want to use these categories, then you can delete them from the list.

The complete list of changes:
[l becomes Lexicon [L]:
[rl becomes Receptor Language [RL]:
[co becomes Communication [Co]:
[rh becomes Rhetoric and Highlighting [Rh]:
[e becomes Exegesis and Text [E]:
[d becomes Discourse [D]:
[cu becomes Culture [Cu]:
[g becomes Grammar [G]:

It worked! Thanks!

Thank you anon848905 and sewhite for these helpful answers! I’d forgotten all about the Autocorrect.txt files; the last time I tried changing one it didn’t end well, and so I’ve just left them alone. Time to try again; your instructions are very clear.
