A consultant in training needs practice writing notes, and it might be best if their initial efforts were only seen by their consultant mentor or supervisor.

I think this is possible with a consultant notes project. The consultant in training can create a consultant notes project, share it with his or her consultant mentor, and add notes to this consultant notes project instead of to the regular project. Then the consultant mentor can evaluate the notes, and if they are valid, they can be added to the regular project with the ‘multi’ feature.

Another method which I’ve used, is to have the consultant mentoree write his/her notes in the vernacular project, but not do a S+R. Then the mentoree copies their notes, pastes them into a Word document, and the consultant mentor then uses Word’s Review feature to respond to the mentoree’s notes. He sends the Word document via email back to the mentoree, who makes any necessary edits to his notes.

A variant of this method would be for the mentoree to put the notes into a Google doc, which he then shares with his consultant mentor. The mentor then makes any comments etc on the mentorees notes, from which the mentoree then makes any changes to their notes in Paratext. Once a chapter is finished, the mentoree does a Send and Receive for that project.

The other possibility is to create a daughter project of the the vernacular or back translation text (whichever that is being used to place the notes), and make a copy of the project. Only the consultant and the consultant in training should have access to the project. In this way, only the consultant and consultant in training would have access to the project. This method might require that the project administrator make the daughter project for them depending on permissions.

I’ve happily been using consultant notes projects like @sewhite described, but is there any way to copy over the notes en masse? I have four mentees so it is rather tedious to use the multi feature hundreds of times. Thanks.

It is possible to bulk copy every note in a project into another project, by closing Paratext, then copying the “Notes_User name.xml” file from one project to the other project. But there is no way to restrict this to only notes related to one book or a set of books, and it would also remove what notes that user had already put into the target project.

My mentor and I also use a shared consultant notes project. Works pretty well!
