When I add a new term or phrase to Biblical Terms, one of the things to fill in is a list of references (one per line) where the term occurs, so:

Now, let’s suppose I generate such a list outside of Paratext, like so (Notepad++):

Now I select the list and paste it into the reference list in the Edit Biblical Term dialog and I get:

Why is this? Because the tool does not accept a simple new line (\n), as in the example above, nor a simple carriage break (\r). It requires a carriage break + new line (\r\n) sequence, in that specific order! Thus:

When I paste this into the dialog, I get the required line breaks.

I’m posting this for two reasons:

  1. If someone else runs into this problem, here’s the solution.
  2. At some point it might be useful for the developers to tweak this so that standard line breaks are accepted in the dialog.

Note that copying from a Paratext-generated reference list works just fine. But sometimes one might want to copy from a self-created reference list. In this case, I was creating a list in Logos of all the places that the Hebrew word עֶבֶד is translated as ‘(court) official’. There’s no way to generate such a list in Paratext, as far as I know.

You can also set a preference in Notepad++ to use CR-LF as the line break.

In Settings > Preferences > new document, you can specify Windows type line breaks, than any new document will have the line breaks Paratext will recognize.

Fantastic. Thanks, sewhite. I thought there must be a way to do this, but I didn’t manage to figure it out myself.
