Field User reports:
"While Paratext Lite (9.0.9.17) is running, it just suddenly closes or stops without any provocation.

Can you think of anything I can look at or try to help his tablet to work better. My two year old Kindle Fire handles Paratext Lite much better than his new tablet."

At this time, I do not have anymore details of the problem. User tablet is Lenovo Tab E8 (1GB ram, Android 7.0).

Please try to have them follow the steps outlined here: https://paratext.org/ufaqs/how-do-i-submit-a-problem-in-paratext-lite. It sounds like they are already running the latest version, so please have the submit feedback.

You could also try uninstalling and reinstalling Paratext Lite, but I believe uninstalling will delete any projects, so do a Send/Receive first.

Thank you for the tip. I will ask the field user to submit a problem.

I think I received the log (PTLS-301)

I guessing the 1GB of RAM in the tablet is the problem. at the time of sending the report the device only had 181MB of free ram. Since Android devices don’t use Virtual Memory / Swap, the OS kills processes when it is low on RAM. Normally process/programs in the background but I guess if it gets really low it will kill the active program.

Looking at AplUni, I see that is not a massive project but it does have a bunch of interlinear data and figures, but I’m not sure the extent the impact this would have. (The crash I looked at was examining the status of all the files in the project AplUni)

I see that sometimes this user manages to S/R fine.
I guess I would suggest (in the absence of using a tablet with more RAM),

  1. Closing down all other running apps. (press the window background button, then swipe the app left/away)
  2. then restarting Paratext Lite, before doing S/R in order to maximize the available RAM, before doing S/R.

i have had the same problem with sudden program closes. anon441204

@anon441204, are you talking about Paratext Lite (on an Android tablet/smartphone) or Paratext on a computer?

Thank you for the help. You are right, the user did submit ‘report a problem’.

I agree that the limited RAM (1GB) is the limiting factor in this situation. It is hard to find a legit and cost effective tablet in PNG that is reputable. Many tablets are sudo Android. Bought a ‘knock off’ before and could not get S/R to USB to work cause the Android OS would not recognize the USB in File Manager. So this is an issue overall in developing countries to find an adequate tablet that isn’t 2 or 3x the cost of what you could find in the USA or other western markets.

Thanks for the troubleshooting. I have passed along to the user to close/kill all programs prior to opening PT Lite.

Good to hear from you pbtpng.it!

I know what you’re talking about! Finding decent quality technology for a good price in PNG is very difficult. It seems that some of the technology available in-country is a number of years behind what is available in places like the US.

I know that one team ended up taking pre-orders from their co-translators for a good tablet from the US and ended up shipping them them over. I believe the co-translators paid at least something up-front to demonstrate their commitment. It’s not an ideal solution, but it may be a helpful way forward.

@anon441204, I’m sorry you’re having that issue. It would be helpful, when this happens, to report an error to Paratext:

Paratext 8: Help menu > Report a Problem

Paratext 9: Paratext menu > Help > Give Feedback

Please be as descriptive as possible regarding what you were doing when Paratext closed.
