It seems my current versions of PT8 and PT9 on Linux are not compatible with the new PT Live server. First of all, is there a way to reliably compare a Linux PT package version with an equivalent Windows PT patch version? The announcement page for the new PT Live server (https://paratext.org/2019/12/10/new-paratext-live-server/) says:

Paratext 8 must use 8.0.100.87 or newer and Paratext 9 must use 9.0.100.5 or newer

My current Linux PT versions are:

$ dpkg -l | grep -E ‘paratext-[0-9]’
ii paratext-8.0 1.47 amd64 input, edit, check, and publish Scripture translations
ii paratext-9.0 0.37 amd64 input, edit, check, and publish Scripture translations

It’s only through experimentation with someone using PT8 in Windows that I discovered that I could not access the same PT Live server as him. So, in summary, here are my two questions:

  1. Is there a way to reliably compare a Linux PT package version with an equivalent Windows PT patch version?
  2. Is there a known roadmap for when the Linux versions will be compatible with the newer PT Live server?

I verified that the latest bionic paratext versions connect to the new Paratext Live server.

paratext-8.0 1.48
paratext-9.0 0.40

These were in the packages.sil.org experimental repo.

paratext-8.0 1.47, paratext-9.0 0.37 are a good bit older.
Linux paratext-8.0 1.47 - corresponds to Windows version 8.0.100.84, which explains why it didn’t work.

I will ensure standard bionic packages.sil.org has the latest build, so hopefully updates for your machine will be available in the next few hours.

Thank you, hindlemail. I’ve been starting to teach colleagues how to
make use of Paratext Live, and it was quite a roadblock when I
realized I couldn’t actually join the same server myself. I got
the updates last night and will be trying them out soon. I
appreciate the work you and any others have done to make PT
available on Ubuntu/Wasta.

Hi n8_in_car,

Good point about aligning version numbers. We will discuss that.

The developer will have to look at this issue when he has access to his Linux box, which is in the office, where he cannot get to it right now. He will look into this as soon as this is possible.

Blessings!

Thanks for the reply. I assume there must be more impeding him than simply having access to a system running a Linux OS, since that can be accomplished from nearly anywhere with a laptop, VirtualBox, and an internet connection.
If he would like more information of any kind about my setup, I’m happy to share whatever I can.

I’m pretty sure he knows that. But his development environment and the source code are on that machine.

I tried a PT Live session with a colleague yesterday, and I still can’t use the same server as he uses. My window tells me to update to a newer version of PT, and his window tells him that I must update in order to use the server he’s using. This happens whether I use PT 8 or PT 9.

Confirming my PT versions:
$ dpkg -l | grep -E ‘paratext-[0-9]’
ii paratext-8.0 1.53 …
ii paratext-9.0 0.48 …

Sorry about this.

Linux Paratext needs an update to be compatible with the latest update of the Paratext Live server.

I plan to release new bionic packages tomorrow.

I’ve uploaded paratext-8.0_1.54 to PSO experimental.

This version should work with the latest Paratext Live server.

It will remain in experimental, until it is further verified.

If you want to try it before it arrives in main/stable PSO then http://packages.sil.org/ has instructions about enabling the experimental repos.

Thank you so much, hindlemail. I’ve already tried it out with a
colleague, and we were successful. This will enable me to better
train others on how to use PT Live.
