I'm supporting a user who recently added cross references in preparation for typesetting. I believe he imported a standard set of UBS cross references. When running basic checks for references, paratext is flagging the first reference in every verse that contains multiple cross references, saying that "a" is an invalid reference. Subsequent references (marked b, c, etc) in the same verse are not flagged as errors.
