Why are segmented cross references marked as invalid references?

Question

I'm supporting a user who recently added cross references in preparation for typesetting. I believe he imported a standard set of UBS cross references. When running basic checks for references, paratext is flagging the first reference in every verse that contains multiple cross references, saying that "a" is an invalid reference. Subsequent references (marked b, c, etc) in the same verse are not flagged as errors. We did do a bit of fiddling to try to figure it out on our own, and we determined that if you delete the a, then paratext flags "b" as an invalid reference. When you put the "a" back in and rerun the check, "b" is no longer flagged. We did specify under language settings that the letters a-n should be used for verse segmentation. What else do we need to do to resolve these errors?

How are the verse segments entered in the language settings? They should be entered as:

a b c d e f .... (space after each character)

I see that if I remove them or have them entered incorrectly then Paratext reports the errors that you are seeing.

As a side note, Paratext always reports the first issue that it comes to in a reference. Once that issue is corrected, then it will look for other issues in the same reference.

Ok that expains why it only shows the first reference as an error.

We entered them in as you indicate. We listed the letters a-n, with a space between each one.

If this image is accurate then it will fail for a and b. You should have:

a b c d e

I'm pretty sure the user entered "a b c d e f g h i j k l m n". I had assumed that paratext had "a b" underlying the elipsis. I'll work with the user to change this. Thanks
