Nested markers do not seem to be supported in footnotes or cross references

Question

There are numerous places where we have used \+nd Here\+nd* in cross reference keywords/quotes or in footnote text. Markers check (in Run basic checks) flags these as "Marker cannot occur here".

Example:

\v 4 “\f + \fr 6:4 \ft Die •bronteks merk hierdie vers met groot letters. Dit is 'n belydenis ook bekend as die \+tl sjema;\+tl* vgl \xt Mark 12:29; 1 Kor 8:4,6\xt*.\f*\sc Luister, Israel, die\sc* \nd Here\nd* \sc is ons God, die\sc* \nd Here\nd* \sc alleen.\sc*\f + \fr 6:4 \fk DIE \+nd Here\+nd* IS ... ALLEEN: \ft Dit word in \xt Mark 12:29\xt* vertaal as “Die Here ons God is die enigste Here”; vgl \xt 1 Kor 8:4,6\xt*. Die Hebreeus kan ook vertaal word as “Die \+nd Here\+nd* ons God, die \+nd Here\+nd* is Een” en “Die \+nd Here\+nd* is ons God, die \+nd Here\+nd* is Een”.\f*

Here is another example:

\v 14 Toe aanvaar die manne hulle woord op grond van hulle padkos. Maar die \nd Here\nd* se beslissing\x - \xo 9:14 \xk \+nd Here\+nd* se beslissing: \xt Num 27:21\x* het hulle nie gevra nie.

This also seems to be the case for other inline styles e.g.:

\+tl ...\+tl*
\+bk ...\+bk*
\+it ...\+it*

I have denied these errors, but it is failing DBL upload checks. 

What is the correct way to style these in cross-references and footnotes?

You have two different Issues:

1) You need the + on the \xt markers. Add those and the  \+nd errors that follow will disappear.

2) \nd is normally not allowed in \cross-references : 

Two options:
A) Change 

\x - \xo 9:14 \xk \+nd Here\+nd* se beslissing: \xt Num 27:21\x* 

to a footnote:
\ft - \fr 9:14 \fk \+nd Here\+nd* se beslissing: \ft \+xt Num 27:21\+xt*\f*

B) Modify the  \nd marker in custom.sty  by adding x to the occurs under attribute:

It looks like the \xt also need to be nested (\+xt) in footnotes in this case to validate with the marker check and DBL check.

Unfortunately there's so much going on in this translations that it is difficult to see the woods for the trees.
