When I try to set \p to give initial line indent everything works as intended except in the glossary where the inden occurs not on the first line but on all subsequent lines.

Yes, there's a (relatively new) modified style for \p in the GLO book which is indenting \p to make it ideal for glossary entries. You can change the settings here if need be.
