Is there a way to adjust the space before and after pictures?

Pictures usually have insufficient space from text.

There are a few rather limited options, but hopefully enough to do what you need to do:

And it might also be possible to alter the space before and after the \fig style -- although I haven't tried that to see what it does (quite possibly nothing...)
