The project you set up to automatically display the text of another project in a different writing system must be a new project. Prerequisites to setting up the project:

  • Download and install SIL encoding converters.
[How do I download and install SIL encoding converters?](http://support.paratext.org/t/how-do-i-download-and-install-sil-encoding-converters/1193).
  • If you need a custom TECkit map converter for the language of your project, ask your computer support person to create the converter.
  • If the converter for the language of your project is other than a TECkit map converter, contact your computer support person to create the converter and/or to help you add it.

A project that displays the text of another project in a different writing system is known as a “transliteration” project. To set up a project to automatically transliterate from another project:

  1. From the File menu, select New Project....
  2. In the Project Properties and Settings... dialog, select the General tab.
  3. From the Type of Project drop-down list, select Transliteration (using Encoding Converter).
If the SIL Encoding Converters are installed on your computer, an "Encoding Converter" box appears.
  4. From the Based on drop-down list, select the project you want to display in a different writing system.
  5. From the Encoding Converter drop-down list, do one of the following:
    • Select a conversion method, and click OK.
    • Select Add Converter... and follow the steps in the expandable section below.
  6. Encoding converters are set up to transliterate from the writing system of language A to the writing system of language B. If you want to transliterate from the writing system of language B to the writing system of language A instead, click the Apply encoding converter in reverse checkbox to place a tick in it.
  7. Click OK to close the Project Properties and Settings dialog.
  8. Close and restart Paratext.

Add a converter

  1. Select TECkit map and click Add.
  2. In the "TECkit map" dialog, click the Setup tab, and click the button to the right of the TECkit file box.
  3. Select a TECkit file, and click Open.
  4. Click Apply and then click OK.
  5. Click Yes on the dialog that asks if you want to make the temporary converter permanent.
  6. Enter a name for the converter and click OK.

Using the selected encoding converter, Paratext will automatically transliterate the following from the “Based on” project:

  • The project text.
  • Biblical Terms renderings.
  • The history of Biblical Term renderings.
  • Glossary entries.

Whenever you save the text of the “Based on” project, Paratext will automatically update all the transliteration projects derived from that “Based on” project (whether they are open at that moment or not). If you want to update a transliteration project manually, select Refresh Transliteration from the View menu.

:checkicon: If you intend to run checks on the transliterated text, you will need to configure the checking inventories for the transliterated project. The transliterated project does not receive any checking inventory information from the project on which it is based.
