:warningicon: This topic only covers the addition of a TECkit map encoding converter. If the converter for the language of your project is other than a TECkit map encoding converter, contact your computer support person to create the converter and/or to help you add it.

If you need a custom TECkit map converter for the language of your project, ask your computer support person to create the converter.

# If you have not already done so, follow the steps in How do I download and install SIL encoding converters?

  1. From the File menu, select New Project....
  2. In the Project Properties and Settings dialog, select the General tab.
  3. From the Type of Project drop-down list, select Transliteration (using Encoding Converter).
If the SIL Encoding Converters are installed on your computer, an "Encoding Converter" box appears.
  4. From the Based on drop-down list, select the project you want to display in a different writing system.
  5. From the Encoding Converter drop-down, select Add Converter....
  6. Select TECkit map and click Add.
  7. In the "TECkit map" dialog, click the Setup tab, and click the button to the right of the TECkit file box.
  8. Select a TECkit file, and click Open.
  9. Click Apply and then click OK.
  10. Click Yes on the dialog that asks if you want to make the temporary converter permanent.
  11. Enter a name for the converter and click OK.
  12. Encoding converters are set up to transliterate from the writing system of language A to the writing system of language B. If you want to transliterate from the writing system of language B to the writing system of language A instead, click the Apply encoding converter in reverse checkbox to place a tick in it.
  13. Click OK to close the Project Properties and Settings dialog.
  14. Close and restart Paratext.

The converter you added will appear in the “Encoding Converter” drop-down list on the General tab of the Project Properties and Settings dialog.

:checkicon: You cannot select “Transliteration (using Encoding Converter)” for an existing project.
