A user accidentally put about 120 MB of pictures into his “figures” folder, and Paratext wants to Send/Receive those pictures. I just read that in 7.6, you can remove “deleted” files using “Convert Project”.

Is it possible to do this in 7.6, and then use the newly converted project in 7.5?

Thanks,

A related question: another user has old usernames that they’d like to covert to different usernames. In the beginning, they used generic usernames based on the language name (i.e., “Nankina One”). We’ve done this because sometimes we don’t know if somebody will stay around for the duration of the project, or if there may be multiple people using the same computer, etc.

She now knows that a number of the people using generic names are committed for the duration of the project and would like to transition them to a username of their own (i.e., “John Smith”). I see that this is possible in 7.6 using the “Replace old User name” feature under Convert Project. Can we do that in 7.6 and then use the project in 7.5?

Thanks,

As the format and location of the files in 7.6 is the same as 7.5, I
can’t see any reason why this wouldn’t work. Just make sure that you
don’t (ever) have 7.6 and 7.5 open at the same time.

The condition usually stated is that you don’t enable the option allow multiple parses and infixes. If you do, you won’t be able to use the Interlinearizer when you’re in PT 7.5.

That said, why not have everyone using 7.6? It’s as reliable as a release version (in my experience, and according to the opinion of a couple of senior SIL folk).

I think that, to be precise, you just have to never edit the same chapter in 7.5 and 7.6 if they’re both open.

I would strongly suggest you not edit the same project in any way with multiple versions of Paratext on the same machine. Probably, you shouldn’t even have the same project open as some files can be written or created without the user doing anything that might be considered “editing”. Best-case is it overwrites the file from one instance with the data from another instance. Worst-case is that something becomes corrupted and can’t be read again.

Paratext, in no way, is designed to handle the same project open in multiple instances, so you do so at your own risk.

Yes, you can use a project converted in PT7.6 in earlier versions of PT7. The only type of project that cannot be used in an earlier version of PT7 is a project that is Transliteration (Using Encoding Converter) in 7.6.

Make sure when you are converting the project in 7.6 that you have deleted the large files that you do not want included in the new project.
