It turns out if your language names 1, 2 and 3 John by putting the number after the book name, this will confuse the reference check whenever you have a reference to Gospel of John chapter 1, 2 or 3:
Example: if John is spelled “Yahya”, and the book names (or abbreviations) are Yahya (gospel), then Yahya 1, Yahya 2 and Yahya 3 for the epistles. A reference to Yahya 1:12 will fail, Paratext recognizes Yahya 1 as a book name, then cannot find the chapter number, and reports “Invalid book/chapter separator.”
A reference to John 10 will also fail. It will recognize “Yahya 1” as the book name, then report 0 is an invalid chapter number.
Fix it by either:
- Remove space in the epistle names. Yahya, Yahya1, Yahya2, Yahya3 won’t have this problem.
- Make the name or abbreviation different for the Gospel than for the epistle book names.
Yahya, Yah 1, Yah 2, Yah 3 won’t have the problem.
- Put the 1 or 2 or 3 in the epistle names in front of the name.
