We received this question from a user.

Recently I used PC Mover to transfer one of our local workers to a new computer, but his new computer somehow corrupted. After various restarts it’s getting back to normal, but when launching Paratext, this error message occurs:

He can use Paratext when it as an administrator, but when typing with the Parya keyboard, Latin letters come up instead of Cyrillic ones. When typing in Libre Office Cyrillic letters appear as usual.

Our director tried reinstalling Paratext but it didn’t work. I think it’s a computer problem. But do you have any ideas what might be causing the issue?

Any ideas? I’m curious if the PC Mover tool corrupted some files along the way, but I’m not sure what to install/repair to fix it.

Then I noticed that the error has something about F:\ParatextPatchBuilds… no idea what that is.

For the error, you should be able to safely delete the C:\ProgramData\SIL\WritingSystemRepository folder. Paratext will recreate it, and other SIL applications (e.g. FLEx) should also work a similar way.

That is the path to the code files for the code that is having the error (in the stack). You can ignore all that - it’s just useful for the Paratext team to try figure out where problems are occurring.

I realize it is late now, but the Project Sharing Manual recommends a process for moving Paratext projects to a new computer. Basically, 1) Do a fresh install of Paratext, download (or sideload from a USB drive) resources, then use Send and Receive to copy projects to the new computer.

Absolutely, that is the most reliable way. I don’t recommend that users manually copy projects from Paratext from one computer to another.
That being said, if you ever need to recover Paratext data from a crashed computer where the hard drive is still intact, you can recover Paratext data this way:

  1. Copy the My Paratext 8/9 Projects folder onto your computer
  2. Point your Paratext to it. One way to do this is:
  3. Rename your My Paratext 8/9 Projects folder
  4. Move the My Paratext 8/9 Projects folder from the crashed computer to the same location as yours
  5. Open Paratext1. Do a Send/Receive from it. :+1:
