I started ParaTExt this morning and noticed a green progress bar in the lower right corner of the screen. Wha…?! I right clicked on the bar and found that ParaTExt was downloading an update.

  1. it would be really nice to have some indication as to what the progress bar is about–in this malware infested world, mystery progress bars are not fun…

The download finished and I got the following two messages in two separate windows:

“Software updates for Paratext are ready to install. Please restart the application at your convenience.”

“Update ptw7.5.100.72 has been downloaded, and a restart of Paratext is required to install it.”

I clicked ‘OK’ on both windows, dutifully closed ParaTExt, and restarted it. And the download started again… I thought it might be a different download, so I let it finish. I got the same two messages again. I checked Help > About and found I was still running the version I had been before the ‘update’ process started. The messages led me to believe that the update would be installed automatically. I closed the two windows again, closed ParaTExt, and started it a third time. The download started again and, as far as Help > About is concerned, the previously downloaded update still has not been installed.

  1. as frustrating as this is in an internet capable country, it would be all that and more in a difficult / expensive internet context

  2. how do I go about updating ParaTExt? Do I need to run the downloaded .pud file manually?

I was able to update my test machine using the automatic update process.

So, maybe it is a problem with getting permission to install the update.
Were you getting the UAC dialog?

The update will be deleted if the installation fails, which leads to it
being downloaded again.

Interesting… I started ParaTExt this morning and, while the update was downloading again (what’s the rationale for deleting a downloaded update file if ParaTExt fails to install it? this would be really frustrating where I work overseas…), I turned off ‘Help > Automatically Update ParaTExt’. Then, before clicking OK and restarting ParaTExt, I grabbed a copy of the downloaded file from C:\Users____\AppData\Local\Paratext73\ParatextUpdate. On the restart I got a UAC dialogue and ParaTExt installed the update. I’m not sure what made the difference, but this was my fifth attempt and all others failed.

Does ParaTExt inform users when a new update is available? If so, I think I’ll just leave automatic updating off just to avoid downloading the same file multiple times when there’s an installation glitch.

Thanks for the tip and help, John+Wickberg.

As long as you don’tdisable all internet access, Paratext will still check
to see if there is an update and give a message when one is available, even
if you have automatic updates turned off.

We put in code to delete the file because we don’t want to keep on trying
to install a file if it is corrupted because of a bad download - that is
what we thought would be the most likely reason for the update to fail.

Not sure what is going wrong with the update, but first thing would be turn
off Automatic Updates on the Help menu.

You can then use the Help/Check for Updates to get the file and install in
manually by double-clicking on the file.

I’ve got a system here and will try the automatic update once I re-install
Paratext 7.5.

John+Wickberg, my [Phone Removed]is not updating either.

I see the message (copied below) and also get the message to restart Paratext but it comes right back to version 7.5.100.71. I checked permissions on the appdata folder and there is full user permission.

In Paratext, I had been set (on advanced) to get beta updates. I put that back to normal,

  1. then I restarted Paratext
  2. checked for the update
  3. restarted Paratext
  4. result = the same [Phone Removed]version.

I have never seen the update status pop up window minimized before, I was able to minimize it by clicking the red X in the upper right corner while an update was in progress and was presented with the green status bar like this:

Seems like another undocumented change to me. If we need the ability to minimize the update status window why don’t we have the Windows standard icon for minimize instead of using the Windows standard icon for “close window” in a non-standard way?

John+Wickberg,

I do not now have the option to install automatic updates turned on. This
happens when I select the option to “check for updates…”

This morning I got a note from a translator in South America and he is
having trouble installing .72
FOr him, AVG (anti-virus) is reporting a problem.

maybe i’m not the first to report this but when i installed the update of
Paratext 7.5.100.72 AVG reported the virus IDP.ALEXA.EXE.
When AVG removed the ‘virus’ windows couldn’t find Paratext. exe to launch
the program. Luckily there was an option in AVG to restore the file.
