Trying to install PT 7.5 for a new translation project, and on both Win 8 & 8.1 I get the same error:

Here’s the log from the Win 8 laptop:

Thanks for all the replies. The install file was indeed corrupt. Although I had my own copy of it, for expediency I used the copy that the project manager in question had already copied to his translators’ computers. On closer examination (file compare), the file had only 40% downloaded; the last 60% was filled with 0xFF values.

A couple of questions:

  • I thought most executable files checked their own integrity before , possibly by calculating a checksum – I mean, I’m pretty sure that at least once in the last 20 years I’ve run and installer and got the message “This install file is corrupt.” If I’m right, why doesn’t the PT installer do this?
  • Couldn’t the error message (the one that appears in the GUI) give some more detail – and some suggested reasons for the failure – rather than just suggesting you to look at the log file?
  • Can anyone tell me why, having created a file on the target disk, most download managers (and I’m including the ones that are built in to browsers, even though most people only refer to third-party ones as “managers”) reserve space for the entire download and then populate that space, rather than simply creating a 0-byte file and writing to the end of it? If they did the latter, the user would be able to tell instantly from the file size that the download did not complete (this thought came from the project manager’s comment: he said, “But the install file that you say is corrupted is 319 MB in size, so it must have finished downloading!)

Clearly the lines at the end of the log file made you three guys think straight away of a corrupted download. Now, re-reading it, I guess that if I’d thought harder about it, I might have realised this too – though the fact that the installer bombed out after quite some minutes – when I thought it was done decompressing content, and was into the install process proper – didn’t help me reach the right conclusion.

Do install failures happen often enough to justify having a topic on this site for each common installer log file error message?

This type of failure is almost always caused by antivirus software. I would first try disabling any antivirus software (temporarily, of course) to see if that works.
Another possibility is that the download got corrupted somehow. You could try downloading the installer again.

Based on the error in the logfile:

This sounds like the downloaded installer file got corrupted somehow. Anti virus is a distinct possibility. I would recommend that you re-download the file to your desktop and then try again.

It looks like the installer file didn’t download correctly:

[04B8:0BCC][2017-01-10T10:14:12]e312: Failed to extract payloads from
container: WixAttachedContainer to working path: C:\Users\Zohirsho\Desktop
Paratext75InstallerOffline.exe, error: 0x80070570.

Try downloading the file again. Don’t have the file on my system right now
to give an exact size and hash for it.
