We have a user that has a number of renderings associated with the NT Key Biblical Terms list. They would like to start using the Major Biblical Terms list. These lists are not automatically linked because the NT list is based on English terms, while the Major list is based on Greek/Hebrew terms.

I don’t know of a way to transfer the data, other than manually copying renderings from one list to another. Does anybody have a better way?

I also don’t know of a way to have two different Biblical Terms windows open at the same time (for copying), at least in the same instance of Paratext. Is there a trick to this, or would you need two different instances of Paratext running (e.g., Paratext 9.1 and 8.0, or Paratext 9.1 and 9.2 Beta)?

Lastly, is there a way to filter the Biblical Terms list to show only terms WITH renderings? I know that we could sort by the Renderings column, but that would change the order of the terms themselves. I think it’s going to be helpful to have the terms in alphabetical order for this process.

Thanks,

Thank you anon703820,

The issue with copying to the Project Biblical Terms list is that they would need to copy both from the older NT list and the newer Major list… this would be difficult to “clean up” later.

Shegnada, I can suggest that as well.

Hi james_post,
When I need to copy terms from one list to another, I open one list in the Biblical Terms Tool and the other list in the Biblical Terms Equivalents window (over in the main Paratext window). It is not perfect, but then both can be open at one time and you can copy and edit in either place.
Hope that helps,

Thank you @anon905537. Do you mean the Biblical Terms Renderings window? At first I thought that wouldn’t work, because I didn’t see a filter box to put a search term in. But then I found out you can create a new filter in the filter drop-down list.

Good idea!

Yep, that is the window I meant (sorry, using our French terminology). Don’t forget that you can change the KTs list in the menu at the top of that window.

Thx,

Hi james_post,
I am not sure why you need to clean up. The project list can happily have both, and we are only talking about a few hundred terms so it isn’t going to slow Paratext down too much. That way you can have the best of both approaches the thematic and the specific Greek word. As I look at the NT Keyterms list I can see that many Greek words have been split into senses, so just using the Greek word you could end up with several renderings mixed in together.
Copying and pasting from different windows seems a pain to me. I would rather copy and paste from the same window and then if necessary just click the star to remove it.
Or have I misunderstood what you mean?

Hi james_post

Since you can’t have two different lists open at the same time, the way you do it is to add whatever terms you want (from both lists) to the Project list. You can either click the star [SHIFT click for multiple] or from the Menu > Tools > Copy all terms to …

Adding terms
I just tested it and confirmed that the menu command copies ALL the 8663 Major Biblical terms (not just the 2035 NT terms or whatever is filtered). So I prefer to click the star. [To do all, select the terms then SHIFT click the last star]. We have found that Paratext slows down if you have lots of terms so there is no point adding the Hebrew terms if you are just doing a NT.

Filter the Biblical Terms
To filter for the Biblical Terms with renderings, I would use a regex: filter on the language. It looks like just the code “regex:” without an actual regex finds everything. You can also save the filter for the user if regex seems too scary for them.

Hope that helps. Let me know if anything isn’t clear.

Have you tried the Guess Renderings tool? That should fill them in quite well wherever there is text.
