The character entered after the opening marker indicates what caller will be used in the text.

In Unformatted view, you can enter your choice of character (preceded by a space) after the initial opening marker. Two examples:
\x - \xo 1:3 \xt… or \x # \xo 1:3 \xt…
In Formatted and Standard view, the default character - is chosen when a cross reference footnote is inserted. This can be changed, one cross reference footnote at a time, by clicking the character in the Footnote pane and selecting and entering a custom caller from the Footnote Caller dialog.

:checkicon: In Formatted and Standard view, the Footnote pane opens automatically when you insert a cross reference footnote. To open the Footnote pane without inserting a cross reference footnote, select Show Footnotes from the View menu.

Automatically generated callers

The - character indicates that an asterisk will be used in the text. If you wish to use a different single character or sequence of characters, you can define this in the Language Settings used by your project (on the Other Characters tab) and then use the + character in your cross reference footnotes. When you view your text in Standard, Formatted or Preview view, the character(s) you define will be displayed.

In Paratext help search for caller id. This has an entry of “Project >
Language Settings > Other Characters”

Going there results in the following screen. You will see the two
dialogue boxes for footnote callers and cross reference callers.

To use these, create the footnote or cross reference with + as the
caller as in "\f + ". This will automatically generate the callers based
on what was specified in the other characters tab. If those fields are
empty, callers will use the endlish alphabet.

Do the footnote and cross reference caller sequences entered into the language settings / other characters dialog apply across one chapter only? Or across the entire project? I'm imagining entering 'a b c d e f' for footnote callers, but wondering what happens if the scope is large enough to need the 'g-th' caller.
In Paratext, the callers reset each chapter. However, if your view is set to show all chapters, the callers will continue to run consecutively. How they appear in the layout tools depends on settings that you use in those tools. Typically callers will ultimately run consecutively for an entire book. In footnotes the use of the + after \f (\f + \fr) signals Paratext to use the list from the Other Characters tab (as above). If nothing is entered in the list, then Paratext uses the English alphabet.
Cross references often are entered with a - (\x - \xo) which tells Paratext not to use a caller (an * is usually displayed simply to know it exists). If you want to use a variety of callers, then you would need to use the + (\x + \xo) and list the callers desired in the box of the Other Characters tab. If nothing is listed for the cross reference callers and you use the + then it should display a cross as the caller.
Note that in Paratext these do not intermix, but in the layout process with Publishing Assistant or PTXPrint you can choose how these get used. PTXPrint allows you to override the settings in Paratext.
