Step back in non-English UI?

I noticed that there are a fair number of UI strings that I’m pretty sure used to be in French, but they aren’t anymore. Is that something that happened recently, maybe with the UI updates to 9.3? In the recent Paratext newsletter it says:

Localization for Paratext 9.3

The localization team is working to update words/phrases in the user interface that were added/changed in Paratext 9.3. Updates will be shipped with future patches of 9.3.

Does this also apply to strings that didn’t actually change?

The UI problems mentioned above were NOT fixed in 9.3.103.5. But they ARE fixed in 9.3.103.8. So the Crowdin updates must have happened sometime before that version. Thanks.

Note, however, that 9.3.103.5 from Dec 13, 2022, is still the latest version that is available on the web site: Paratext Downloads - Paratext Bible Translation Software. I think @james_post is hoping to figure out a better process for updating the download version on the web site more quickly. For those of us with more challenging/expensive Internet, we don’t like to have everyone download a 100Mb update themselves. It’s preferable to download it once and encourage people to update from the server. If the web site isn’t up-to-date, I can tell Paratext to download the update, then grab the patch .msp file from the ParatextUpdate folder before it’s deleted. (Actually, it looks like the patch isn’t deleted anymore. I hope that if a new patch is downloaded that at least the old patches are deleted???)

Unfortunately there are times when something changes in the interface and this breaks an existing localization. When the localization teams fix these changes in Crowdin (the tool used for localizing the interface) it can take a while or even skip an actualization before these get to the user.

I have noticed at least a couple of situations where after getting the latest update (currently this should be 9.3.103.10 as of March 16) not all of the strings update. This can be caused by a conflict with old files. I will add a quick video to show how this can be fixed. Please note that this will fix the issue if the localizations have actually been done. For example in French and Spanish all of the interface should be localized. The video will be in a separate communication.

Note that what happens is sometimes the update doesn’t seem to change the saved localization files. You can manually delete those files and let the update replace them with the latest version.

Just as an example, with Paratext 9.3.103.1 (latest), UI set to French, this is what I see on the Glossary tab of the Edit Rendering window:

All the UI is in English. But if I look in the LocData\fr.xml UI file, I see that those strings should be localized:

jeffh - thank you for pointing this out. There are two things happening here.

1. The French interface is currently on 89% complete - strings were changed with 9.3 and have yet to be updated.
2. Some of the strings “look” the same in the xml file, but are actually different. Until the Crowdin data is updated to Paratext these do not show up. Once the strings are updated from Crowdin (hopefully in an update soon) these strings should appear correctly.

This has been reported as a bug - to make sure the Crowdin files are updated in Paratext.

In Crowdin, the French interface is now showing 99% complete. jeffh, can you please confirm whether you’re still seeing this error?

The French interface seems to work correctly in 9.3.103.10. I’m not sure which update had the changes, but I think it has been in for a little bit.

I have PT9.3.103.7 and there are still several places where the French UI has English even though PT 9.2 already had French. One example is when you click the Selectionner une plage (select a range) a Liste récapultative (Checklist). The selection panel which appears is in English. I’m pretty certain it used to be in French.
